George Mason University's Engineers for International Development won the Second Place prize of $7500 in the 2015 NCEES Engineering Award competition which connects professional practice and education.
For five years EfID's project to develop water supply, distribution and storage capacity in Sabana Grande, Nicaragua joined Mason's student engineers with practicing civil engineers with the goal of enhancing infrastructure in this developing community.
"The group has spent countless hours on these projects and helped more than 3,000 community members," said Matt Doyle, the group's practitioner advisor.
Liza Durant, acting department chair of the Sid & Reva Dewberry Department of Civil, Environmental & Infrastructure Engineering accepted the award on behalf of the student group from Michael W Zmuda, senior associate at Johnson, Mirmirman &Thompson. The money from the award will enable the group to continue their work and fund a second project in Nicaragua this spring.
