A key characteristic of the most recent academic years can be summed up with the word growth. Growth at Mason Engineering mirrors a national trend, but it also demonstrates the school’s ability to address strategic concerns of the local, national, and global economy.
More than 30 years ago the school’s founders planted the school's roots in the digital age. As those roots grew they gained depth and strength, supporting additional programs, anticipating and responding to industry needs, and becoming a force for innovation. We now apply our knowledge in computing and modeling to challenges in every field of engineering.
Because of its ever-increasing and highly diverse portfolio of programs, enrollment at Mason Engineering has surged from 5,200 students in 2013 to nearly 8,000 in 2018. To keep pace with this surge the school increased its faculty ranks to 231.
New faculty members teach students, but they also bolster the research enterprise. The school are seeing unprecedented increases in research expenditures and awards. In the last 12 months Mason Engineering earned $68 million research awards—a record high for the school and a large percentage of the university's overall research portfolion. From biomedical explorations of innovative prosthetics to strategies for optimizing traffic flow through airports, this research has a direct impact in solving real-world problems.
