About the Program

The Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Computer Science is for students who want the knowledge and expertise of computer science to work in various disciplines that require advanced computing techniques. These fields do not merely use computing but create new and interesting problems for computer scientists.

Fields in Applied Computer Science include:

  • Bioinformatics – Bioinformatics requires a strong preparation in both computer science and biology fundamentals in which vast files of raw data are being analyzed to find answers to important questions in molecular biology.
  • Computer Game Design – Provides students with a sound understanding of the disciplines of computer science through art, animation, music, and storytelling. Any industry that requires efficient programmers who are experts in developing graphical simulations with real-time requirements will benefit from this degree.
  • Geoinformatics – This interdisciplinary field blends a strong preparation in computer science with the geography fundamentals associated with cartography, aerial photography, and satellite image analysis and modeling.
  • Software Engineering – Ideal for students who want careers designing, building, and evaluating quality software products, in either a team or in leadership roles. This program emphasizes formal education in software usability, applied object-oriented theory, software requirements and design, software testing, and software maintenance.
  • Technology Policy – This concentration with the Schar School of Policy and Government is designed to graduate computer science practitioners who are equally familiar with the regulatory landscape, policy implications, and ethical decisions that govern their profession.
