The institute is one of 11 new National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes that NSF has established in 2021 with a total investment of $220 million. George Mason University professor Aditya Johri will serve as a member of the institute’s education and outreach team.

Professor Sanmay Das received two grants from the NSF to use computing to develop a new method of optimizing these resource allocation decisions.

Last fall, faculty teams were invited to submit proposals describing thematic hiring opportunities. The decision committee evaluated 14 proposals for innovation and timeliness, alignment with Mason strengths, recruiting plans and hiring strategies.

Researchers from George Mason University, Virginia Tech, and Old Dominion University collaborate on a $1 million funded research project by the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative to improve AI in autonomous cars.
